Ford Ecosport Overview
The Ford EcoSport in this updated avatar is just a few months old and in that time, it has been surfing all the right waves to keep the excitement levels high. But wanting to up the ante further, Ford has now introduced an EcoSport S as part of the range. There’s some visual upgrades inside and outside and under the hood besides two power plant options. The diesel is the familiar 1.5-litre TDCi unit while the other one is the 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine which finally makes a comeback for this iteration of the EcoSport. Ford Ecosport Design & Style
The Ford EcoSport is a smart looking vehicle and this updated model that we have over here is no different. There are hardly any changes to the outsides and the SUV continues to flaunt its muscular and aggressive front fascia. The alloy wheels remain unchanged on the Indian model and we would have appreciated if Ford could have provided a different design with this update. It is also good to see that the spare wheel is still mounted on the tail-gate unlike the overseas model. The fog lamps get integrated DRLs while the headlights get light guides which are basically thin strips of white light. The EcoSport now gets a new brown colour which looks pretty attractive. The boot opening button is moved underneath the chrome handle unlike the previous model.
Ford Ecosport Cabin & Comfort
Since this is a top-of-the-line variant you get all the features available with the EcoSport and then some more. Standard stuff includes climate control, 8.0-display for the SYNC3 infotainment system and button start.What’s new, however, is a large dose of Vitamin C that Ford has injected into the cabin. Orange seems to be the new popular shade among all manufacturers and it looks like Ford doesn’t want to be left behind. There’s orange stripes on the part leather-part fabric seats as well as orange accents for the centre console, door handles and AC vents. Lastly, in addition to the orange bonanza, it also has the instrument cluster from the export spec model, complete with a black and white TFT display. On the safety front, this vehicle comes with ABS with EBD, hill start assist, a traction control programme, six airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounting points.
Ford Ecosport Engine & Transmission
The highlight of the updated EcoSport is of course the 1.5-litre diesel engine. The oil-burner now whacks out an additional 9 PS of power and the total power output has been bumped up to 100 PS, which also matches the numbers of the Figo twins. Torque remains at 205 Nm and the engine is still mated to the same 5-speed manual gearbox. Gear shifts are not the smoothest out there and still feel a bit notchy. 0-100 km/hr has been improved by a small margin which isn’t really noticeable in normal usage, but what is noticeable is the fact that the TDCI mill has a much better bottom-end now and the car responds to throttle inputs in a very brisk fashion.
The clutch feels lighter now while the turbo starts spooling in from a notch below 2000 RPM. All the 99 horses are delivered across the rev range in a very linear manner. 100 km/hr comes up at 12.76 seconds from standstill compared to 13.43 seconds of the previous model. The EcoSport also gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and both of these remain completely unchanged. The EcoBoost is offered with a manual transmission while the bigger petrol engine gets a 5-speed manual gearbox along with the option of a 6-speed DCT.
Ford Ecosport Driving Dynamics
The ground clearance of the Ecosport has been a boon. At 200mm higher from the ground, this makes it easy to drive on bad roads and even park on not-so-well paved roads. Driving on winding roads is also a lot of fun with the Ecosport. The electronic steering is precise and doesn’t make you feel tired at any moment. However, the suspension set-up is on the stiffer side. This means a lot of the bumps and the occupants feel shocks from the road.
One thing that many experts will miss out on talking is the stowage space in the Ecosport. There is a drawer under the co-driver seat, two one litre boots can fit in any of the front door pockets and even the glove box is large enough.
Ford Ecosport Braking & Safety
To begin with, our press demonstrator was the Brown. The Mars Red colour might appeal to several, but I prefer the Kinetic Blue on the Ecosport. This in my opinion looks more upmarket and carries a hint of sophistication. The variant we drove was the Titanium Option. It comes with keyless entry, push start and stop, artificial leather, in-dash music system with Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB connection, reclining rear seats, 60:40 split, six airbags and ABS. Ford Ecosport bottomline
Right from the day it was launched, the Ford EcoSport has always fared as a very good product offered at a good price point. It has its positives like the engine, dynamics and features along with some negatives like the limited space on offer, but it continues to remain a very attractive package on the whole. Ford hasn’t increased the prices of the updated model by a big margin and while extra power is always good to have, the additional useful features are like an icing on the cake and hence the EcoSport continues to remain a very good choice in the compact SUV segment.
