Getting inside the Mahindra SUV is a delight and the company has taken good care by providing the most suitable features that buyers look for at that price range. The SUV is available in a total of six trim grades with three engine tuning versions. It is also offered in 2WD (two-wheel drive) and 4WD (four wheel drive) options, thereby proving the SUV’s off-road prowess.

Mahindra Scorpio Design & Style

M&M has retained the body of the old car, though most of the panels, except for the roof and doors, are new. The overall proportions are still lopsided, thanks to the excessive height and narrow width of the body (which has an effect on the driving dynamics) and it’s easily recognisable as a Scorpio.It’s the nose that is truly all new and gives the Scorpio a fresh face. The big fan-shaped grille has been replaced with a slimmer but wider design with distinctive looking ‘dagger-shaped’ chrome strips. The headlamp cluster is also superbly designed, with a neat LED strip sitting above the projector lamps. We also loved the way the smart-looking skid plate has been integrated into the tough-looking bumpers. The bonnet scoop adds a sporty touch, apart from feeding cool air directly to the air-to-air intercooler.

From the side, the carryover doors and windows make the changes less obvious and the old-fashioned rain channels betray the Scorpio’s vintage.There’s new plastic cladding and a cheesy looking faux vent behind the wheel arch, which don’t really work, but the larger 17-inch wheels do improve the Scorpio’s stance.The plastic cladding on the tailgate with an inset chrome garnish for the number plate do a good job of making the upright Scorpio look less slab-sided from the rear. The tail-lights with their LEDs and clear glass are another design highlight.

Given the limitations the designers had, it’s fair to say they’ve done a pretty good job. The new Scorpio looks far more sophisticated than before, though we are not sure how well this would go down with traditional Scorpio owners. The big changes though are below the body and centre on the all-new ladder or body-on-frame chassis that will underpin future Mahindras. The new chassis is far stiffer and stronger than before, and is designed to meet future crash regulations. The limitations of the body didn’t allow the wheelbase to be altered, though the new chassis can be stretched and widened to suit the dimensions of future models.

Mahindra Scorpio Cabin & Comfort

More than the exteriors, it is the interiors that have the maximum refreshment in the Mahindra Scorpio. Not just the design, also the styling, shade and quality. The 4 spoke steering though looks bigger but is a bit smaller giving for more a car like feel. It now gets steering mounted controls and the downward flow of the silver strip looks great. The Hexagonal design of the speedometer and tachometer with the information display between the two looks futuristic. The A/C vents now get chrome rings to add to the bling. The entire dash is now split with darker shade of grey with a light shade.

There is a further a chrome Scorpio badging on he co-drivers side dash too. The centre console o f the Mahindra Scorpiois dark grey cladded and has a nice 7 inch touch screen which is just above the now fully automatic climate control. Now even the seats are dual tone with grey and blue. Both the driver and co-passengers side gets armrest. And these are small details that a very well appreciated.The 2nd row seats are flat but have more cushin now and come with better thigh support. The 3rd row as as usual opposite facing jump seats.

The space in the Mahindra Scorpio remains the same. . The front row seats are large and spacious. The second row are a tad tight on knee room but there is ample of head room. The third row is majorly for short distance travel. The Scorpio’s quality and fit and finish are much improved. The Mahindra Scorpio Intelli Hybrid with its evolved interiors is a good option to consider.The Mahindra Scorpio does come loaded with a lot of features, however most of the features are available from S8 and S10, and till S6, the bells and whistles are limited. The features on S10 include dual airbags, ABS, touch-screen music system with Bluetooth connectivity and Aux and USB connectivity, reverse parking sensor and satellite navigation system. Majority of the features like touch screen, navigation etc are available only in the top-of-the-line S10 variant. This variant also features indications by voice.

Mahindra Scorpio Engine & Gearbox

A key reason for the Scorpio’s success, right from the time it was first launched has been its strong engines. The 2.2-litre 118bhp mHawk is carried over from the previous car, has been further refined, mildly retuned and mated to a new gearbox (the same five-speed 5MT320 unit from the Xylo). Performance is even better than before and the new Scorpio lumbers past the 100kph mark from rest in 13.4 seconds, which is 1.4 seconds quicker than the previous model; pretty impressive for a 1.8-tonne vehicle. In-gear acceleration too is a shade quicker than before, especially in third and fourth gears.

But it’s not the outright performance, but rather the manner in which the engine delivers its power that is at the heart of the Scorpio’s appeal. The torqueymHawk motor is so responsive that it makes the heavy Scorpio feel light on its feet and faster than the VBOX numbers suggest. The engine pulls without fuss from as low as 1,500rpm and there’s a strong surge after 1,800rpm. The mid-range punch of this motor is superb and you feel there’s a surplus of power. Overtaking is effortless and the Scorpio can be wafted past slow-moving vehicles quite easily. It’s not an engine that likes to be revved though and it’s best to shift up before 4,000rpm to land back in the meat of the powerband.

The engine is amazingly refined as well and at cruising speeds it’s impossible to tell it’s a diesel. The new gearbox is better than before but still feels quite notchy and the clutch could have been more progressive and lighter.

The Mahindra Scorpio is slowly turning out to be a beast in the affordable 7-seater SUV segment. It has a powerful engine working under the hood and if you are choosing the 140 bhp version, you can be assured that your car can pin down any SUV or MPV of the same price bracket while on the road. However, the base 75 bhp models seem to be a little dated in terms of the power. Being such a big car, it is smaller in power than many hatchbacks and the lack of enough power at your disposal will hurt your ride to some extent.Apart from that, the ride quality of the car is extremely good. The interior seating is comfortable and the annoying engine noise has been brought down considerably. The gear shifting is smooth and the acceleration is delightful too.

The company has offered dual front airbags as safety feature, albeit with top-of-the-trims – S8 and S10. However, the S6+ trim comes loaded with a front driver side airbag as standard feature. In addition, there are side intrusions beams for added safety; but, what irony, the entry-level S2 variant is even deprived of them. A special mention goes to Mahindra’s Voice assist system which timely keeps reminding the driver regarding the door ajar, seat belt warning, low brake fluid, and fuel on reserve. Also, one gets to see the Tyre-tronics system with the Scorpio which is an indispensable safety feature as it keeps on updating the driver about the exact air pressure and temperature in each tyre. The Scorpio has never been a pretty car, neither has it been brilliant at one single thing. However, it has always delivered a lot of value at its price. At Rs 11.46 lakh ex-showroom, the two-wheel drive S10 we’ve driven shows exceptional value for money.
