Today the Land Rover Discovery is in its fourth generation and is called the Discovery. The Land Rover Discovery has got several awards including the best large SUV in the world. This 7-seater SUV is quite capable and benefits from Land Rover design and technology. It is available in India with a TDV6 diesel engine, making it an formidable alternative in the full sized SUV space. Book a test drve for Discovery in Hyderabad at Tryaldrive
Land Rover Discovery Design & Style The Discovery 4 is an updated version of Discovery 3 to make it look similar to the Range Rover styling. The Discovery 4 or LR4 as it is known in the North American market now has an urbane styling when compared to its predecessor. The front grille resembles that of the Range Rover, and it also gets the additional side metal scoop. The Land Rover’s clamshell hood is retained and even the stepped roof of the Discovery. The roof rails have now gone off and the silhouette looks more contemporary than the previous Discovery. The older Discovery was a derivative of a typical early 2000s. The glass surrounding the third row of seats is now smaller and the wheel arches do not have the bulge. The rear still gets the step glass and lower part of the bumper is black. This continues till the rocker.
Land Rover Discovery Cabin & Comfort
On the inside, the Discovery is straight and simple. Purposeful, yet classy. It cannot be termed very premium but the build quality is solid and built to last. The finish in some areas does feel ordinary. The instrument cluster has twin dials and is lit in white, having a simplistic design. A new centre console comes in place and houses the gear dial which rises for use only when the ignition switch is activated. A new touchscreen infotainment system is seen in this SUV which is easy to operate even while driving, however, it takes time getting used to the interface .The driving position is not very tall but near perfect, and offers good visibility. The seats are firm, well contoured and comfortable. The seats also have electric adjustments. The vehicle over all is pretty spacious and has air vents for all rows. The huge panoramic glass roof further makes it feel spacious. The unique thing here is that every passenger gets a USB charging point which makes it a total of seven USB ports.
The Discovery Sport is slightly longer than the Freelander 2 and hence it also comes as a seven-seater option. Hence it makes this compact SUV a good option for a larger family. But its only the kids who can occupy the third row comfortably . The seven-seat version gets a space saving spare tyre instead of the full-size spare which is found on the standard five-seat version.
Land Rover Discovery Engine & Gearbox
Powering the Land Rover Discovery 4 in India is the same 3.0-litre, twin-turbo diesel engine which does duty in the Jaguar XF S. However the Discovery 4 is a much heavier vehicle but this motor copes up very well. Producing 245 PS of power (XF produces 275 PS) and most crucially 600 Nm of torque, the Discovery 4 is very drive-able. The best part about this TDV6 powertrain is the ability to offer 500 Nm of torque in 500 milliseconds from idle. That is an 83% of maximum torque available instantly. Performance is very good from SUV standards and the Discovery 4 responds to throttle inputs briskly. This engine is mated to a smooth shifting 6-speed automatic gearbox. Shift the gearbox into manual mode and the instrument cluster conveys to you – ‘Command shift activated’. On full steam, the Discovery 4 will sprint to 100 km/hr from standstill in 9.6 seconds. That is very comfortable for a vehicle which weighs almost 2.6 tonnes! Engine is refined and revvs all the way to a shade above 4500 RPM.
Land Rovers are very capable off-road and the Discovery 4 carries the same genes forward, which makes it an extremely capable machine on the road less traveled. With an approach angle of 36.2 degrees, ramp break over angle of 27.3 degrees and departure angle of 29.6 degrees, the Discovery 4 is at home in every situation. The highly sophisticated Terrain Response System (with 5 settings), Hill Descent Control (with Gradient Release Control) and adjustable ride height makes it a cake walk to go off-road. The wading depth of 700 mm makes the Discovery the perfect vehicle for cruising through water logged roads.
Land Rover Discovery Driving Dynamics
The Discovery 4 has a smooth and composed ride. The suspension does a good job of absorbing most of the jolts and bumps. The Discovery 4 glides over bumps filtering out most of the shocks from being transferred into the cabin. The handling of the vehicle isn’t impressive considering the size and the centre of gravity of the SUV. But on highways and in city traffic the handling is good, and that is where the Discovery 4 will be spending a majority of its time. Even the steering wheel is light at low speeds and weighs up well when the speed increases. If some day the owner decided to take the Discovery 4 off the road, he shall be rewarded with the most capable off-road system. Five different terrain modes can be selected from the knob on the centre console. Off-roading in a Discovery is just effortless and this is the pinnacle of all the Land Rovers, even be it the voguish and urbane Evoque.
