Toyota Etios Overview
Quite honestly Toyota has not been able to make an impact in the Indian market especially in the compact car segment. Both their offerings includes the Etios compact sedan and the Etios Liva hatchback are not as successful as their rivals. The compact car segment has plenty of competition right now and their rivals are much more feature packed, stylish and economical offerings.The Etios sedan and the Liva hatchback have been here in the Indian market for a long time now and Toyota seriously needs to refresh these products in order to get a stronghold in the B-segment car market. Before the Indian launch took place Toyota also unveiled the updated 2016 Etios sedan the Etios Liva hatchback in Brazil. The new car has also been dubbed as Etios Platinum.The newly launched Etios twins brought along with it plenty of updates on both their exterior as well as interior. Thanks to the new updates the new cars looks more aggressive now and also packs plenty of new updates as well.
Toyota Etios Exterior & Look
The Etios in all its iterations had always been labelled as dull-looking and it looks like Toyota wants to shed that image once and for all. The manga inspired aggressive face and subtle changes to the back have certainly given the car a bit of drama.
The grille is now minimalistic while the bumper has been given a sporty appearance. To reduce the visual weight of the chrome on the front, it (the bumper) has been fitted with black inserts above the fog lamp housing while the overall shape has moved from rounded to in-your-face square. The side profile remains the same as before while the rear has had its chrome strip moved from the top of the boot lid to the middle below the Toyota logo. Also changed is the rear bumper which now gets some sporty curves that flow from the sides and into the number plate section.
Moving inside, you still get the odd-looking dashboard from the older car. However, what you also get is a completely redesigned instrument cluster which looks far better than the older one. However, it is still placed in the centre. The texture of the seat fabric has also been given a change. The seats of the Etios are large and comfortable while space and storage areas in the cabin are also found in abundance. Some noteworthy features include electrically folding ORVMs, standard ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts at the rear, and a three point seat belt for even the fifth passenger. You also get an 2-DIN audio system with decent quality speakers. The AC does its job well most of the times but on a really hot day, I found it struggling to chill the cabin.
Toyota Etios Engine & Gearbox
The Platinum Etios can be had with a 1.5-litre petrol or a 1.4-litre diesel. Both are four cylinder units and the former produces 88bhp/132Nm while the latter is good for 67bhp/170Nm. Both are only offered with a five-speed manual.
We got our hands on the more popular diesel model which uses the same engine from the more expensive Corolla Altis albeit in a lower state of tune. Firstly, it’s a noisy engine this and the clatter is quite audible in the cabin even in heavy t raffic. It has a lower torque figure than most of its contemporaries and has gained some weight over the outgoing model in view of the new safety standards but this has not really affected its performance. Toyota has worked to spread out the same and has given it an excellent mid-range which allows for ease of movement at low speeds as well as out on the highway. You can cruise at 100kmph at just 2000rpm while pottering around in traffic in third gear works just fine. It has an ARAI fuel efficiency figure of 23.59kmpl. They have also addressed the issue of the clutch action by making it lighter than the one in the outgoing model.
Toyota Etios Driving Dynamics
The ride quality on the Etios is very good but the suspension is stiffly sprung and hence some sharp bumps filter in the cabin. However, the car never loses composure and always remains stable irrespective of road conditions. The steering offers brilliant feels and feels great to operate. The car feels eager to dive into corners but on heavy cornering, the tail slides out due to the rear end of the car being a bit too light. Braking performance is also good and confidence-inspiring. What Toyota has really taken care of about the new Etios Platinium sedan is the safety of the passengers. As a result the new Etios packs ninth generation ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) safety systems across all variants as standard. Toyota Etios Verdict
The Toyota Etios is actually a very practical car which is also comfortable and efficient. It doesn’t fetch good sales with private buyers mainly due to its quirky-looking exteriors and interiors. While the exteriors have been redesigned mildly now, the interior still has the same layout. However, the Etios now feels more appealing than before and that should positively help Toyota generate some more sales.
