The French automaker for a long time has been deciphering the way to make place in people’s heart. And this is being carried forward through its SUV-esque cars which looks premium and give value for money proposition. Renault Captur is one such car which has been touted as a premium crossover with its stunning looks and mind blowing interiors. It is the expansion of company’s product range in the subcontinent. Renault Captur Style
The Renault Captur is a global SUV which is being launched in India too. This is a contemporary looking vehicle which doesn’t look like a typical SUV, but more of a crossover. It is built using the Duster platform(M0) but does not look rugged or tough like the Duster. It rather looks more sophisticated, stylish and urban. In short – good looking!
The front of the Captur is attractive and reminiscent of many modern Renault vehicles globally. It gets a sleek front grille and stylish headlamps. These headlamps are full LED one and are powerful too. They have intergrated indicators which glow dynamically and look appealing. The bumper is well integrated and doesn’t seem to be added separately. There are datime running LEDs on the bumper next to the fog lamps.
From the side it has crossover proportions. The first thing to strike is the massive ground clearance, which measures 210mm. This is enormous! Enough for the deadliest of bad roads. This is a boon if you often travel upcountry. There is a groove on the side, which gives it a slightly muscular look. The roof is available in a contrasting colour and can be customised. The Captur gets 17-inch alloy wheels which look attractive.
The rear is not much to be talked about. It gets LED taillamps , which are not very big in size. There is a chrome door sill with Captur badging and there is also a rear spoiler which is integrated. There is a scuff plate below the rear bumper. The rear reminds you of the Kwid, somewhat.

Renault has introduced a new top-end variant known as the ‘Platine’ edition. This variant gets black and white leather seats and gold surrounds around the AC vents and Media-Nav. The leather seats not only look neat but also offer good cushioning and back support. However, under thigh support is lacking for tall passengers in both rows. The rear seat too has just about average headroom and kneeroom for tall passengers. This may come to you as a surprise since the Duster has tons of space but the truth is that the Captur has a smaller-sized cabin. Seating position is high too, which gives a commanding view of the road on the upside but this also eats away the headroom.
The upward sloping shoulder on the window line makes the rear glass smaller and this gives out a feeling of reduced spaciousness in the cabin. Renault has added some leather inserts on the door panel, which is a good thing but overall plastic quality could have been better since Renault is calling it a premium SUV. There are good number of features in the cabin. To start with, Renault is offering automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. You get LED cabin lights, ambient lighting, new digital speedometer ISOFIX child seat mounts and a cooled glove box which has the depth to keep long items.
The Duster-inspired 7-inch touchscreen audio system houses the display of the reversing camera. The software has now been optimised to boot faster but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are surprisingly missing. Other standard features include keyless entry, push button start and automatic climate control with rear AC vents. The ARKAMYS-tuned sound system churns out some good quality sound. Boot space is at par with the Duster and the rear seat has an option of dropping down completely but there is no 60:40 split.
Renault Captur Gearbox
The Captur shares the engines from the Duster. And unlike the diesel engine which is available in two states of tunes in the Duster, the Captur gets only the powerful 110PS and 245Nm of torque, paired to 6-speed manual. Start the engine and you are welcomed by typical clatter of a diesel that settles into the idle mode after a few seconds. In city driving, you have to learn a lot as heavy clutch bites quite lately and don’t help much in engine progression. So if you want to get over quickly, you need to apply extra effort on the accelerator and move the needle to over 2000rpm, else the car will feel boring. This directly means that quick overturn in the urban areas will need downshift. But there is enough torque kicking in and driving for a while will make you get accustomed with it. Driving on the open stretches is absolute bliss, the Captur would prove a fantastic companion on longer journeys. Reaching the three digit speed is unnerving while maintaining it is a lot easier.
The petrol engine is the same 1.5L 4-cylinder unit making 106PS and 142Nm of torque. The engine is superbly refined and combined with the adequately insulated cabin, you would hardly hear any engine noise. The least you would hear from the exhaust is when you push the engine hard towards the redline. Driving the petrol Captur is obviously easier and fun-to-drive than the diesel one. Reasons? The relatively lighter clutch which bites quite early and ensures that the driver doesn’t play with the pedal frequently. The engine doesn’t get stuck and the progress is always ready, giving a relaxed driving experience.
If you are a calm driver, then the petrol engine won’t let you down and you will feel you are aptly overtaking the car in front of you. At three digit speeds you will definitely want the sixth gear to come in action. There is also an Eco mode if you are really concerned about your wallet. And many would be disappointed with the lack of automatic transmission. The car is being touted as a premium product and the lack of automatic transmission will certainly distract many buyers. Even Duster features a CVT unit, so Renault must look into it.
The car is powered by the same tried and tested engines working in the Duster. The powertrains are tuned to derive maximum fuel efficiency with the petrol one delivering 13.87kmpl, the diesel motor on the other hand, returns 20.37kmpl. The figure looks good on paper but expect the diesel one making around 16kmpl in mix driving conditions.
Renault Captur Driving
Just as other Renault cars, the Captur too offers excellent ride quality. It gobbles up most of the potholes with ease and keeps you comfortable. This has been one of the biggest USPs of the Duster, and the Captur carries the same legacy. The cabin is also pretty silent. One can be very comfortable in this vehicle and there are no doubts about it.In terms of handling, it was surely impressive. There is minimum body roll and this is despite the super high ground clearance. The steering feedback is similar to the Duster, which is excellent. The steering though feels heavy at parking speeds.

The Renault Captur will get dual front airbags along with ABS and EBD. The SUV also gets Brake Assist. Renault’s sales and service network in India is limited in reach and the company still has a long way to go when compared to some of its immediate rivals. With the Duster having had a very successful start to Renault’s campaign in India, it was about time that the French manufacturer brought a more upmarket SUV. The Captur strikes the right cords with some sporty styling and a good number of features while delivering on the performance and dynamics front. It does have some dark bits like reduced cabin space (compared to Duster) and average plastic quality which could have been better since Renault is marketing the Captur as a premium SUV. We reckon that it will boil down to pricing and if Renault can get the price spot on, the Captur is set to be another success story.
Renault Captur is available in four variants such as RXE, RXL, RXT and PLATINE. The pricing for the Captur starts from Rs. 10.0 lakh and goes up to Rs. 13.25 lakh.
