Skoda Octavia Overview

Back in early 2000s when the executive sedan segment was still nurturing, Octavia was shaking the auto segment for Skoda at the global level. Skoda resurrected Octavia in the year 2013 after discontinuing the Laura, its alter-ego in the year 2010. Almost six years down the line and this third generation model has proved to be the bread and butter of the Czech automaker in the country.

Skoda Octavia Design & Style

The most sought after model in India and globally, Octavia’s new version comes up with decent style changes. The aesthetic modification at the front includes the dual headlamp design which not only looks sharp but aggressive as well. The split-type headlamps might polarize opinions but it does bring some character to the front fascia. However, on the positive note, the new Octavia gets full-LED headlamps as against the bi-xenon ones in the pre facelifted model. The fresh headlamps are high in performance and frugal in energy consumption.

The fog lamp cluster has been given halogen bulbs as well as cornering functionality. How beautifully the split-styled headlamps merge into the grille looking like an extension of the same. The exhaust pipes remain hidden from the view. In short, the changes are mostly focused on the front profile which does add some robustness to the overall profile.

Skoda Octavia Cabin & Comfort

The cabin is one of the reasons why this is the best-selling Skoda in India. The interiors of the third-generation Octavia launched in 2013 paved the way for the current models of Skodas including the flagship Superb sedan. The dashboard’s layout is clutter-free and the carmaker has adopted a minimalistic approach while designing the cabin. This is a good thing as the quality is future proof until and unless the 4th generation model arrives. And what the Czech automaker has done with this updated version is to fill some missing gaps. The car continues to sport the same dual-tone theme but the use of lighter colour gives it a slightly different shade and same goes for the upholstery.

Further, the carmaker has used glossy black accents surrounding the climate control unit as well as the gear lever. The door trims brushed with aluminium looks more appealing than the earlier faux wood. So, these little modifications add up a lot to uplift the ambiance inside. As with other cars in the VW family, this one has also been bestowed with latest techs and goodies. The new Octavia gets latest touchscreen infotainment with a capacitive touch buttons. From the driver’s perspective, the addition of 12-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory function can make easy to hop on to the perfect position instantly. The memory not only stores three different driving positions but also holds information on adjustment settings for external side view mirror. Back to the rear, where the ac vents pampers you throughout the journey, the USB charging ports help you juice up your devices at critical moments. Skoda Octavia Engine & Transmission

The car remains identical to the outgoing version mechanically, except for the wider rear track as mentioned earlier. Powertrain options remain the same and you can choose from the same 1.4-litre petrol, 1.8-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engine options. The diesel motor feels as smooth as ever and offers brisk acceleration along with excellent throttle response. The engine is a tad noisy though, with the clatter typical of diesel engines. It comes mated to a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox as before. The 1.8-litre petrol version has always been the better driver’s car and is a hoot to drive with its performance and the responses from the 7-speed DSG transmission.

The abundance of space and plush ride quality are the highlights of the Octavia as before, with the latter not compromising handling or driving pleasure. The steering offers good feel and feedback too, while feeling perfectly weighted, which adds to the joy of driving the car. While the diesel version is a good handler no doubt, the petrol version handles even better, thanks to its independent rear suspension that also offers a slightly better ride.

The handling ability has come at a slight cost which is that the ride quality on this facelifted Octavia has been setup to be on the stiffer side, but in a way that isn’t back or deal breaking. This car is good in safety as well you can get up to 9 airbags in the top end variant. Overall, the facelifted Skoda Octavia builds on the strong points of the earlier model and wraps them in a package that is even neater and more modern than before.
